Midwifery care is personal, nurturing care before, during and after
your birth.
Senior midwife, Maggie Bennett, CPM is the
practice's primary care provider. She maintains a teaching practice
mentoring midwife apprentices. She is assisted by a team of dedicated
women including: Clare Twohig, who has recently earned her California midwifery licence; Rachel Wahl, Carri Newhouse and Shannon Gamble, the newest
apprentices who teach childbirth education for the practice; and
Anna Warner, who is the practice's Business Manager.
BEFORE YOUR BIRTH
I provide regular and thorough prenatal checkups
to make sure you and your baby are healthy and progressing well.
I’ll give you information and guidance on what to expect during
your pregnancy and birth. We’ll discuss healthy lifestyle choices,
nutrition and breastfeeding. Midwifery care is personal, hands-on
care. My prenatal visits are structured to allow plenty
of time for questions and answers. Together we’ll spend time
exploring and resolving any concerns you may have about your pregnancy
or birth. While I have attended hundreds of births, I know that
each woman’s experience is unique. I will work with you to
help make your birth all you hope for.
DURING YOUR LABOR
Birthing at home with a midwife brings you continuous
hands-on attention throughout your labor and birth. In addition
to monitoring you and your baby’s progress and health during
labor, my assistants and I provide emotional support and guidance.
We can be as available or as out of sight as you wish (many women
prefer to labor privately or with just their partner for a good
part of their labor). There are no arbitrary rules or timetables
about how you go through this process. My role is to support you
in birthing your baby, your way, safely and gently.
AFTER YOUR BIRTH
After your baby is born I will do a complete
newborn evaluation to make sure everything is normal. My assistants
and I stay with you, help you establish breastfeeding and see that
you and your baby are resting comfortably. I’ll then return
to check on you and your baby 24 hours, 3 days and 10 days after
your birth. Our course of care ends with a final 6-week visit, which
includes family planning and a pap smear. However, I am always available
to answer questions you might have as a new family.
